    The question is ” …
The question is “why should guitars be immune to all the advantages mass production brings to ever other facet of modern life?” I paid to have a neck hand-built once, it was poor, and not as good as a mass-produced one – why did I expect it to automatically be better? Machines are good at machining things, do you know about CNC machines? Again I ask “How can a smaller company automatically make better guitars than a larger company?”. I would expect the opposite.

    For half the cost, …
For half the cost, guitars today play better, I can get cheaper electrics today for half the cost electrics were 30 years ago, and at twice the quality. For acoustics I think they are double the quality for the same price (although house prices are now 20 times higher) They feel better, stay in tune better, are better intonated, and have a better action. I don’t doubt a cost-no-object hand build would be excellent, but we are not talking about those guitars here.

    Cheers

    what makes the new …
what makes the new guitars ‘better’ than the ones that were made when there was less machinery involved?

    I got a 314CE …
I got a 314CE taylor, and a Larrivee D05 and om50. Both the larrivees are better than the taylor – more subtle and easier to play (all were setup by a specialist), even though I paid less for the larrivees – all were new (mind you, the pickup ES system on the taylor is excellent, and would cost a lot to add). The Taylor is a little harsh. differences are the bracing and the shapes. the OM50 sounds the best – smaller body and larger soundhole makes it less boomy – excellent for recording

    why should a large …
why should a large good company which uses mass-production be unable to match the quality of guitars made by a smaller company? The guitars on sale today are way better than the ones made when there was less machinery involved

    Larrivees must be …
Larrivees must be the best value for money quality acoustics there are. I have an OM9 and C09, great guitars with very responsive necks. I rate them as good as my Santa Cruz D (although different voicing) and way better than Taylors that I have owned – find them one dimensional guitars that cut through a mix, but Taylors have no subtlelty. Also have a couple of high end acoustics – MciLroy and a Nigel Forster, now they are real class acts.

i couldn’t decide to buy between a larivee or a taylor. i ended up buying the taylor but at that point it was only for the brand haha. they’re both AMAZING guitars and larrivee’s are so much cheaper. i want to get one soon.
